Prenatal/Pregnancy Massage

The ultimate treatment for the expectant mother, this massage is administered safely and effectively to relieve muscle tension, as well as aches and pain.

The massage is designed to prepare the body for the many changes that occur during pregnancy and studies have shown that women who receive regular massages have fewer complications during their pregnancy and labour and that their babies are more settled.

This type of massage will help alleviate muscle tension, spasm and cramping, sciatic pain, swelling of the lower legs and general back, neck and shoulder discomfort caused by hormonal and postural changes. It will help improve quality of sleep and help balance mood swings and improve overall well being.

During the massage, endorphins are released by you, the mother, and passed on to your baby. Endorphins occur naturally in the brain and are often referred to as the ‘feel good’ chemicals. They also have added analgesic (pain killing) properties.

Part of the repertoire of pregnancy massage includes techniques which can be applied to the abdomen if you so wish, but this is not a requirement, as everyone feels differently. The rest of the body will still be covered – arms/hands, legs/feet, whole back/shoulder, face and scalp. The stimulation effects of the massage strokes help increase circulation, increasing the flow of nutrients delivered to the baby via the placenta, and aid the lymphatic system by encouraging the white cells of the immune system to eliminate waste and toxins, thereby reducing swelling.

As a mum, regular massages will enable you to become more aware of your own body. This will improve your ability to relax during the first stage of labour, which often results in a shorter, easier less painful birth and can give rise to more success with breast feeding.
